According to the way governments are spending money on air pollution, you can tell it is a big problem worldwide. It causes health problems and contributes to global warming. Beijing, London, Mexico City, New Delhi, and Paris are some cities that have dangerously high pollution. This article is going to describe air pollution and some ways it can be fixed.
What it is Air Pollution?
Air pollution is a mixture of solid particles and gases in the air. Carbon dioxide is one main pollutant but, others include car emissions, chemicals from factories, dust, pollen and mold germs. Ozone is a gas that plays a major part in air pollution. When it forms pollution it is called smog. Air pollution in developing countries is usually high because there are a lot of factories that let out pollutants. The air indoors can be polluted too.
We (the people on Earth) should want to decrease the amount of air pollution because exposure to poor air quality is very bad for our health and is equivalent to smoking six cigarettes a day. Toxic air has been blamed for road traffic crashes because the pollutants are distracting drivers by causing watery eyes and itchy noses. Another reason why we should stop air pollution is because it affects regional climate which is a big problem for ecosystem productivity. Black carbon, a major component of soot that is made by burning fossil fuels, is harming the environment by melting glaciers. Black carbon melts glaciers because when it lands on the glaciers the sun is attracted to the dark material causing them to melt more quickly. Finally, air pollution may have ties to diseases such as Dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.
How to Fix it
Like most problems air pollution can be fixed. You might want to help the Earth and try some of these solutions. First, try cutting down on the amount of fossil fuels you use and switch to renewable sources of energy like wind, water, or sun energy. Also, maybe if you and your friends go to the same activities why don’t you carpool or if the activity is close you can always walk there. That way there are less cars on the road and less fossil fuels burning. Finally, remember to turn off lights, computers, and electric appliances when you are not using them.
The government is also helping to solve the problem. Through laws and regulations they are forcing companies to be more responsible with their manufacturing activities. So, even though factories still cause pollution, it is less plentiful and a lot more controlled. In addition, our government teams up with other governments to help stop pollution. Finally, car manufacturing companies are also building more energy efficient cars which pollute less than before.
